LEGIONELLA RISKS INCREASE DURING SPORTS CLUB LOCKDOWNS

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has advised that all club premises that have been closed or had reduced usage during the COVID-19 outbreak must ensure that they take action to reduce the risk of Legionnaires’ disease.

The HSE warns that if water has not been drawn off during the lockdown, stagnation can occur due to lack of use, increasing the risks of Legionnaires’ disease.

The HSE advises clubs to review their risk assessment and manage the legionella risks when:

  • Reinstating a water system or start using it again
  • Restarting some types of  older type air conditioning units

If the water system is still used regularly, maintain the appropriate measures to prevent legionella growth.

Getting specialist help

You may need advice from a competent person and/or specialist to help you identify and implement suitable controls for legionella.

HSE recognizes that getting specialist help may be difficult during the coronavirus outbreak. Legionella and Fire Safe are deemed as key workers so we have been working throughout to ensure Businesses are taking the appropriate action for reopening.
